What's in a name??
The name battle of what this little girl planning to join us in a few months is to be called has commenced. It's been kind of ugly. With lots of looking up the meaning of the names and laughing at eachother because we don't our child to be given a name that means "bland". Etc. The battle has also included lots of "I have a friend whose dog has that name" and "If you want to her name her Berlin, we may as well make her middle name Frankfurt". It's been an ongoing fight. Here's my problem...I feel weird naming this baby anything that a friend has named their child. You know what I mean? And every name we both like....I think of a friend who either has that name, a child with that name, or a dog with that name. UGH. Making me crazy. What's your opinion on giving your child a name that someone you know has already used???

so i started a baby name list when i was in elementary school... and a lot of those names are being used by our family already haha guess ill get last pick on the names by the time my turn comes around
I think you should name her whatever makes you happy. But I didn't know any Alices or Claires/
seriously it doesn't matter if you name your kid the same as someone else. They way I think about it is there will ALWAYS be someone else with the same name. The only name I think that are off limits are your sibling's kids. who wants a first cousin with the same name?
Stop being friends with the other family.
So what names are on the list?
Print it and let us add some others.
berlin is my favorite! convince matt! you won't always live in germany and it is the cutest name ever. i also know a little girl named holland which think is super cute. tell us all your other names on the list! i love thinking about baby names!
I used to get fed up with the fighting over names and I would finally say "Fine! I'm the one who signs the birth certificate so I use the name I want!" Then Dad would say "Fine! I'm the one who gives the baby a name on the records of the church so I'll use the name I want!" Then we would start over. I usually could wear him down, though :) Good luck and happy battling! And, in my opinion, you and Matt are the only ones who should have a vote. Someone is going to get their feelings hurt otherwise. I'm just sayin'....
love Mom
I'm with your mom--you can't let people start weighing in too heavily or then it's just as even bigger fight!
Does Matt come up with names or just veto all the one's you like? I make Sean a list of maybe ten and tell him he can only cross off three. The other's stay on the table for the time being. Then he can cross off a few more.
Anyway as for the original question: I've so far been unable to name a child the same name as someone we know right then and there, but if we move away from that family, game on. Does that make sense? Location makes a difference. So some of my Reno friend's kids names are back on the list! I also agree that first cousin names should be off limits, and that's pretty much just first come, first served. (Kearis will have a struggle naming her kids when there's like 50 cousins names to avoid!)
Well apparently I think it's ok! We had no intentions of stealing your name, it just kinda happened. It was the only name we didn't have the reactions like you describe. Just don't pick good names and we'll quit copying you.
My opinion: Your siblings' kids names are off limits (in other words, not the name of their first cousins). Also your very best friend's kids names are out.
Matt comes up with names that I don't like....I come up with names with names that he doesn't like. That's pretty much how it works. We have ONE name that we're both OK with. But neither of us are obsessed with it. We have one name that we both love, but we have a neighbor whose daughter has that name, and a good friend in HB whose daughter has that name. And a good friend whose dog has that name. See the problem???
I'd name her what you guys want too and not worry about who has a daughter or a dog with that name. When it's all said and done you will be the ones that will be living with her for eternity. Take it to the Lord if you have any doubts about it and you feel so inclined .
Sooooooooooooo happy for you guys..
Since the BIG wedding of the year I am all about the name Pippa (as in Middleton)!! Love love love Berlin also though......What ever you decide will be awesome!!! Take care...........
i think you should use the name you love. Especially if its not already used in the family. I had a friend ask if she could name her daughter Adele, I was thrilled she loved it so much! And Adele LOVES knowing a little baby with her name. lol I've even thought about maybe using the same name as a cousin but ended up not using it. Family is a bit harder but friends/dogs/etc i'd totally use if i loved it.
I think you can use friends kids names but not neices or nephews names. Picking a name is so hard!!
Okay, I totally wanted to use Chase. =) We didn't end up with it but I had the same struggle! I still think it's okay but know exactly where you are coming from. Good luck. Berlin is cute! We have a friend that named her little girl Vienna because she studied abroad in Vienna, Austria.
I say name your kids whatever you want regardless of what others think or have named their kids or pets. There's nothing wrong with naming kids after relatives. My current favorite girl names are Delaney and Dagney and for boys I like Travis, Wyatt and Luke. Never did like Maximillion Billion.
I like Dagny for a girl. One of the best female novel characters of all-time!
As long as you don't take any of the names I've been keeping secret (so they didn't get used in our family before I get to them) I'll be ok. :) but reusing a name is okay as long as they don't see each other very often. Ensley named her american girl doll Kylee and it freaks me out.
Go with a name you love... Its not like you are copying from someone. You may not even be in touch with those people years and years down the road anyway. (I don't mean anything negative, but we are military, so thats how life goes sometimes.) I keep a list too (though I am probably still years from babies) and I have eclectic taste, but I will share just in case I can help:
Arliegh, Ainsley, Willa, Mary-Kaitlin, Anneke(it Dutch and pronounced like Annika), Carolina, June, Ruth, Eisley, Ever-Jane, and Bronwyn. Good luck!
