Versailles

On Saturday evening before we drove back home, we made the trip out to Versailles. Unfortunately we made it there just as they were kicking everyone out of the (palace?) I don't really know what you'd call it. It's used for congress type stuff now, but has been lots of different things at different times. Anyways, we could still walk around the grounds and see the AMAZING gardens. They were HUGE. Like unbelievable.

Standing in the courtyard in the back.

This, I'm pretty sure, is my very favorite picture ever.

Hallie taking her turn to hang out with a statue.

And out in front of the gardens.

Yes, that is where Marie Antionette lived until the mobbing fish ladies came and rioted. Then they were taken to another smaller palace in Paris. Before she lived in it with Louis XIV, Louis XIII lived there. He had such a grand palace as part of his political plan. It was called the "Palace of the Sun King", and there the king could keep an eye on everyone. It's in a U shape I believe. This is where the Tennis Court Oath took place, and many treaties were signed in the Hall of Mirrors, including the treaty that officially proclaimed GERMANY as its own united nation. The fountains took so much work, that a watcher would signal when a royal person was coming, then they would turn the fountain on. There's a mini tour since you got there right as they were kicking you out. Thank my European History teacher if you'd like ;)

Oh, all these pictures give me flashbacks to my Europe tripping days....seems very long ago. I remember very well that sinking feeling of wishing that I had learned more and more in order to appreciate some of what I was seeing.
One of my dominant feelings started one day when we climbed the stairs out of the subway in Rome one day and BAM! Right there, 30 feet away was the Coloseum. Right there. I kept thinking, really? Seriously? These things really do exist, and not just in pictures? I know that sounds dumb, but I think growing up in America, and especially in the western half of the country, we just don't get it about buildings and places with real history.
Anyway, glad to see you're enjoying it...hopefully the kids will remember these things, and at least they have pictures. They were there.

Can I trade places with Hallie? What I wouldn't give to have you as cool parents and be that young and carefree and darn cute and in Europe...
